No. 3.
Sir John Davis to Viscount Palmerston.-(Received October 21.)
My Lord,
Victoria, Hong Kong, August 19, 1847.
I HAVE the honour to transmit an official return from Consul Macgregor, of the comparative export of teas from Canton during corresponding periods of this and the last year, as the best answer to the assertion of the "Chamber of Commerce," that the expedition of April last had done "incalculable injury to trade."
To adopt the Consul's words in sending the above return, "On the whole, in so far as the amount of returns in tea shipped from Canton for the British markets can be assumed as a criterion of the probable extent to which British manufactures must have been disposed of, it is gratifying to find that under a combination of unfavourable circumstances the exportation of tea from the 1st April, as per inclosed comparative statement made up to 12th August, has exceeded that of the same period last year by a million of pounds, and that from the commencement of the year the excess amounts to six millions and a half,"
